Cosy Floor Beds (Montessori-style)

Tavi's new bed

A cute floor bed by Green Eyed Monster caught my eye on Spearmint Baby recently and I have since realized that there is more point to a floor bed than just being a cosy corner to sleep in. Montessori Methodology interests me (although I admittedly am not that well-informed yet), and the floor bed is actually an integral part of Montessori thinking. I have never before even considered a floor bed for Alec but I have to admit I am intrigued!

I couldn’t find anything on why they that this was a good idea. I think I understand but what is the theory behind it?

I’m so frustrated now because I know there is a good link that I used to have about this.

      There is some info here:

But basically the floor bed in Montessori thinking is about respect for the child. That he/she should be able to decide when he falls asleep and wakes up and should be free to move about his environment. When children are a little older they should be able to go to sleep when they feel tired.

My best resource for Montessori methods in practice is the fabulous blog http://www.howwemontessori.typepad.com. You should definitely check it out if you are curious about Montessori…

Amy, here’s a good (and short!) read: http://aidtolife.org/movement/movement1a.htm

I’ve also collected a bunch of floor bed nurseries on Bedstart.
