Foodie Friday: Pre-packaged Baby Food

When it comes to babies, I am completely mental about two things: sun protection and natural food. About most other things I can be quite casual, but when it comes to these two, I have pretty strong feelings and I can even get a bit judgey.

Alec is just now starting on solids. I wanted to wait as long as possible to start him on “real food” but we ended up trying the fist taste tests when he was just five and a half months because I thought he was ready. He was not. Except for the very first taste, Alec just wasn’t very interested. So we waited a bit. And now, just three weeks later, he is all about the rice cereal and happily gobbling up all the veggies we offer. Sweet potatoes are his favourite.

The timing of the food introduction is not great though, as it coincides with our big trip. We are spending six weeks at home in Sweden. It was a looong trip coming over and while here, we will be spending quite a lot of time on the go. So although I am adamant about making our own baby food, I’m also very excited and relieved to see that there are so many great options for wholesome, natural, organic baby food available if ever convenience dictates that we give Alec something pre-packaged.

Before we left I went to Whole Foods and stocked up on:

NurturMe is one option we are planning to try. These convenient pouches of quick-dried food come in four flavours and can be mixed with water, breast milk or formula. I love the fact that there are no weird additives, just ingredients that you recognize. And I think these will be great to have in my diaper bag to just mix up in a pinch.

I also bought a bunch of pouches of Sprout baby foods – they have roasted sweet potato!

And some pouches of Plum Organics fruit purés.

Honestly, I hope we don’t have to use pre-packaged baby food too often – I really like giving Alec freshly homemade food – but I’m so glad that there are such good options available when we do. And I definitely feel good knowing that I have a few of these pouches in my diaper bag.
